"As a sailor who raised his daughter aboard, I was touched by this book. Litzow writes from the heart." - Cap'n Fatty Goodlander, sailor and writer

When marine biologists Mike Litzow and Alisa Abookire decide to follow their dream and sail from Alaska to Australia, they agree that they won't leave until their son, Elias, is one year old. But when he is just ten months old, they give up waiting, strap him down, and set sail.

In his deeply personal account of their trip, Mike tells the story of the stress and exhilaration, the closeness of family life on board, and the fierce beauty of the open ocean. Demonstrating a moving affinity with the wildlife, people, and cultures encountered along the way, this is the inspirational tale of a family afloat in the Pacific.

"A book that speaks to both sides of the brain simultaneously and without contradiction…prose so beautiful, and with such a dose of self-deprecating comic relief, that you yearn to be there with them." - Cruising World

"Mike writes well and with utter honesty about the sometimes overwhelming sense of responsibility he feels when he and his partner Alisa take a toddler to sea. He clearly shows the stress this places on their marriage and how it is balanced by the rewards they and their slowly maturing son reap. Essential reading for anyone contemplating voyaging with very young children." – Lin Pardey, author of Storm Tactics Handbook, Self Sufficient Sailor and Bull Canyon

"Litzow is a talented writer…evocative and powerfully visual." - The Age (Melbourne)

"Eminently readable." - The Sydney Sun-Herald

South From Alaska Sailing to Australia with a baby for crew eBook Mike Litzow

I was trying to think of how to concisely write a review for "South From Alaska", and I'm failing... so here are a few short thoughts...

1 - I wanted to read this book from the moment it was first published in Australia -- Mike's blog is one of my go-to weekly reads, and I already knew I loved his writing and stories -- so when it finally came out in Kindle format I was ECSTATIC.

2 - This story is inspirational but it's also *real*. Mike & Alisa are two tough cookies, and they deserve serious props for what they've accomplished with two small babes!

3 - I had to look up the definition of a few words (so I learned something!) but I also laughed out loud at Elias exclaiming "poop!"... I think a book that can simultaneously stretch your brain and make you laugh about poop deserves 5 stars :)

I would highly recommend 'South From Alaska' and I eagerly await 'East From New Zealand' :)

South From Alaska Sailing to Australia with a baby for crew eBook Mike Litzow Reviews

If you have ever dreamed about quitting your job and going on an adventure, this book is for you. You'll love it even more if you have children, an affinity for sailing, or interest in any of the destinations -- from Alaska to North America's west coast to the South Pacific.

Extremely well-written and fun to read. You'll find yourself wondering why you're not already on your own adventure!
I love this book. Only half way through it, left it on the plane now I have to buy it again! We are hoping to follow in their footsteps with 2 young children on a boat and I found the stories very encouraging but also "real". Great story tellers and extremely entertaining. Can't wait to get it in the mail agian.
Ripped through it in 2 days. I sailed my own small sailboat down to Mexico and came back, sold the boat, and went on to the next adventure. Now married with a little one, we're on the cusp of purchasing a new vessel and heading out into the ocean. It's great to hear about and learn from experienced cruisers handling all the tasks that a cruising boat requires, all the while caring for a child. And a 10 month old at that. Whew! It's not a "How To," guide book, but just reading the story is encouragement, and a great read for a nervous wife or an armchair bound sailor.
I enjoyed every page of this book!

Mike's writing style makes for an easy read and his vivid description of what it's like to go sailing with a baby is outstanding. Mike writes with refreshing honesty and while he is very descriptive he doesn't sugar-coat the reality of what it's like to do what he and Alisa (his wife) have done.

This is a MUST read for
- parents wondering how to travel by sailboat
- every wife that wants to know what it's really like to go sailing/cruising
- anybody planing to sail the Alaska -Mexico- Pacific crossing to Australia
- anybody preparing to go cruising (the fact that Mike doesn't sugar coat things means that you get real account of what to expect out there)

A complete emotional role coaster that leaves you searching for his next book (which I'm sure is not too far away) and wanting more.
I just finished reading South from Alaska in the cockpit of my boat sitting at anchor. This book brought back so many amazing memories for me of my own trip across the Pacific with my husband. We are now dreaming of doing it again with our two children. Mike's honest words and thoughts throughout the entire chronology are heartwarming and captivating. The way he intertwines scientific and historical observations into his emotional and self-reflective narratives kept me continuously absorbed. I applaud him for not only juggling the adventure with his wife and child but to also put pen to paper and honestly and informatively express the entire experience so we can all see this wonderful part of the world through his eyes.
Very good writing, sparing the readers from most sailing technicalities to concentrate on the experience of life at sea for a young couple, relatively new at sailing, and with a young infant boy.
I truly enjoyed reading Mike Litzow's account of their crossing of the Pacific, particularly after my wife and I crossed the Atlantic on our own little boat last spring. I wholeheartedly subscribe to Mike's words"...I like to say that you could sail the world without my wife on board... but I wouldn't recommend it! ".
I Bought this book at my daughters request for a12th grade summer reading assignment. The assignment was to read a book that you thought would inspire you in your career choice, or your interests. My daughter who wants to be a marine biologist, loved it, and recommended it to the rest of the family. It's amazing!! We are power boaters and love the water. It's a wonderful, really well written book. The author is very humorous, informative and inspiring! I doubt there are many people who would choose this type of life for their family, but for the dreamers, this book could be as close as we get to these experiences in our lifetimes! I have heard they are continuing their adventures, and are now in Africa on safari. I hope they come out with another book soon!
